Salt Ponds, South San Francisco Bay : Image of the Day

"The red and green colors of the salt ponds in South San Francisco Bay are brilliant visual markers for astronauts. The STS-111 crew photographed the bay south of the San Mateo bridge in June, 2002. This photograph is timely because a large number of the salt ponds (more than 16,500 acres) that are owned by Cargill, Inc. will be sold in September for wetlands restoration a restoration project second in size only to the Florida Everglades project. Rough boundaries of the areas to be restored are outlined on the image. . Over the past century, more than 80% of San Francisco Bay s wetlands have been filled and developed or diked off for salt mining. San Franci" [1]

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"As of 2004, the Refuge spanned 30,000 acres (120 km 2 ) of open bay, salt pond, salt marsh, mudflat, upland and vernal pool habitats located throughout south San Francisco Bay. About 9,000 acres (36 km 2 ) of salt ponds within the refuge are managed by Cargill Salt, which has perpetual salt-making rights. Cargill uses the salt ponds to concentrate brines as part of its solar salt operation which produces salt for food, agriculture, medical, and industrial uses throughout the Western United States. . Located along the Pacific Flyway, the Refuge hosts over 280 species of birds each year. The variety of birds that may call the refuge home or as a stopover consist of the white pelicans, kites, hawks, ospreys, and eagles." [2]

"South San Francisco Bay Charter's Handbook - San Mateo Bridge . Going past the San Mateo Bridge . There's plenty of good sailing north of the San Mateo Bridge. Sailors must be aware of the shallow water extending from the western tower of the main span of the bridge northward past the red marker number "8A". There's one other shoal to look out for, the San Bruno Shoal which is covered by as little as 2 feet of water at low tide. San Bruno Shoal is locate east of the main channel adjacent to markers "4" and "6". Sailboats don't have to stay in the marked channel but should avoid the area of San Bruno Shoal." [6]

At about the same time a trawl was put in use in the northern end of the bay. The law prohibiting the exportation of dried shrimps was retained until 1919, when it was repealed. From 1919 to the present time Chinese shrimp nets have been used in District 13, the shrimp trawls in District 12, and not more than one-half of any one catch could be dried legally. . "The horizontal pattern of mesoscale (1–4 km) variability in salinity was a poor predictor of mesoscale patterns in chlorophyll a, suspended particulate matter, and daily primary productivity in the South San Francisco Bay estuary during spring 1987. The tidally-averaged salinity distribution varied over weekly time scales, reflecting inputs of freshwater as well as transport processes. Spatial distributions of the other quantities also varied weekly, but not in concert with the salt field. Spatial patterns of phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) deviated from the salinity patterns, largely reflecting in situ production of phytoplankton biomass during the spring bloom. The tidally-averaged distribution of suspended particulate matter (SPM) was highly dynamic and responded to (1) the riveri" [15]
