Bay Trail: Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge - Fremont - Part 1 - Tidelands Trail and Visitor Center

"It was founded in 1972, after lobbying efforts by the grassroots South San Francisco Baylands Planning, Conservation, and National Wildlife Refuge Committee. At the time, it was the first refuge of its kind in the country to be established in an urban area. By 1979, the Refuge had acquired 18,000 acres of land, of which 15,000 were obtained from the Leslie Salt Company (now the Cargill Company). In the 1980's, thanks to the efforts of the Citizen's Committee to Complete the Refuge, headed by Florence and Philip LaRiviere, Congress authorized expanding the Refuge to 43,000 acres. It celebrated its silver anniversary in 1997. It receives over 350,000 visitors a year, with more than 10,000 using its ed" [4]

USGS California Water Science Center Projects: San Francisco Bay Wetlands Priority Ecosystem Studies

"This information will assist our client agency, the Fish and Wildlife Service, in choosing optimal management strategies for salt pond restoration and management that will maximize benefits to wildlife in south San Francisco Bay. . We are studying specific North Bay salt ponds, also called the Napa-Sonoma salt ponds, to develop background and guidance for possible conversion. Our initial findings of these ponds indicate significant avian use and conditions (for example, habitat quality, and prey abundance) that benefit migratory birds as well as unique invertebrate populations that are important forage for migratory birds. Salinity and depth seem to play an important role in invertebrate assemblage structure and subsequently avian use at different ponds. Pond 2A has br" [5]

Portrait of an Estuary: San Francisco Bay - Oakland Museum of California - Absolutearts.com

"Familiar landmarks--one of the Port of Oakland's huge container cranes silhouetted against the sky at dusk, the Golden Gate Bridge seen from above, an almost abstract image of salt evaporation ponds in South San Francisco Bay colored coral-pink by salt-tolerant algae and bacteria--contrast with more intimate views of the wildlife that populates the region, like a portrait of a snowy egret wading and a Forster's tern perched on a rock in the water, the two seeming to be engaged in conversation. . The beauty of the photographs belies the fact that San Francisco Bay is one of the most urbanized and degraded estuaries in North America. Factors affecting suspended-solids concentrations in South San Francisco Bay, California

"Factors affecting suspended-solids concentrations in South San Francisco Bay, California . David H. Schoellhamer . U.S. Geological Survey, Sacramento, California . Measurements of suspended-solids concentration (SSC) were made at two depths at three sites in South San Francisco Bay (South Bay) to determine the factors that affect SSC. Twenty-eight segments of reliable and continuous SSC time series data longer than 14 days were collected from late 1991 or 1992 through September 1993. Spectral analysis and singular spectrum analysis were used to relate these data segments to time series of several potential forcing factors, includ" [31]

"From 1972 to 2002, MSI conducted over 6000 trawls into the South San Francisco Bay, capturing and releasing fish and recording information about species collected, as well as measurements of water temperature, salinity, and other information from each trawl. "For several decades I have been a casual bird observer in the south San Francisco Bay Area and my curiosity had led me to acquire several of the acclaimed major 'Bird Guides' ( Peterson's, Sibley's, National Geographic, etc.) However, I seldom was able to ID birds I saw with confidence using those guides, there were just too many possible candidates in the guides for each of my sightings and I seldom could narrow down the possibilities to one species. The 'Birds of San Francisco' solved that problem for me. The 'Birds of San Francisco' guide focuses on approximately 120 of the most common species found in the Bay Area. It allots one page per specie which contains a large color illustration and references to other S.F. Bay Area species that have a similar appearence. There are also very useful graphic keys which quickly indicate the preferred habitats of that specie along with migration and breeding timeframes. Also included is a textual description and behavioural information useful for ide" [35]
