Factors Controlling Tidal Flat Morphology in South San Francisco Bay

From the time of the first US Coast and Geodetic Survey bathymetric surveys in 1858, the saltmarshes and mudflats of South San Francisco Bay (SSFB) have decreased in area by 80% and 40%, respectively. Much of the saltmarsh loss was due to salt pond leveeing, while mudflat loss can be related to lack of sediment input, wind-wave erosion, and sea level rise. Plans for marsh restoration include breaching of salt pond levees with the goal of restoring the 15,100 acres of acquired ponds to tidal marsh the largest such restoration in the western US. The effect this would have upon the adjacent mudflats is unclear. In this analysis, the tidal flats of SSFB are broken into geographically similar regions and multiple cross-sections are drawn from mea

On the drive up, you pass a great park, Joseph D. Grant County Park, with outstanding hiking and mountain biking. Much of the road is rated at 25-mph max, with many 5-mph hairpin turns. There are many turn-outs on the way up so you can let motorcycles pass, and many of these pull-outs provide bonus views to the west. This trip cannot be rushed. RVs, trailers and large vehicles are not advised. .
Sediment dynamics at the newly restored Island Ponds, South San Francisco Bay

We are evaluating sediment dynamics at the Island Ponds, the first salt ponds to be restored through the South San Francisco Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project. We are measuring sediment accretion within Pond A21, using the sediment pin method (PVC pipes set 3 meters into the sediment). The dense gypsum layer (up to 25 cm) and the lack of vegetation preclude the use of other methods. For short-term, mass-based accumulation rates, we are using a modification of the filter paper method , with sample discs that are deployed over a two-week tidal period. There has been substantial sediment accumulation within Pond A21 since breaching in March 2006, with approximately 8-10 cm of sediment accumulating over

Seasonal/Yearly Salinity Variations in San Francisco Bay

In South San Francisco Bay , a major issue is the need to distinguish the influence of local stream discharge and waste water input from those of delta discharge on water chemistry and contaminant levels. . . Importance of Salinity to Resources in North San Francisco Bay . In North San Francisco Bay, delta discharge is the major control on seasonal to yearly variations in salinity. Freshwater inflow also affects the day-to-day fluctuations in salinity, but on these shorter time scales tides and winds also play a role. Most of the controls on delta discharge are ultimately found, in turn, in large-scale atmospheric circulation over the Pacific Ocean, which during the course of its west to east flow, governs the amount and timing of preci

Factors affecting suspended-solids concentrations in South San Francisco Bay , California

Factors affecting suspended-solids concentrations in South San Francisco Bay , California . David H. Schoellhamer . U.S. Geological Survey, Sacramento, California . Measurements of suspended-solids concentration (SSC) were made at two depths at three sites in South San Francisco Bay (South Bay) to determine the factors that affect SSC. Twenty-eight segments of reliable and continuous SSC time series data longer than 14 days were collected from late 1991 or 1992 through September 1993. Spectral analysis and singular spectrum analysis were used to relate these data segments to time series of several potential forcing factors, includ

Fish Populations in the South San Francisco Bay , 1972--2002

From 1972 to 2002, MSI conducted over 6000 trawls into the South San Francisco Bay , capturing and releasing fish and recording information about species collected, as well as measurements of water temperature, salinity, and other information from each trawl. This data is summarized in the report "Trends in South San Francisco Bay Fish Populations from 1972 to 2002" published by MSI. In this paper we investigate some of the trends in the fish populations and make some suggestions for using the data in a calculus course case study.
Amazon.com: Birds of San Francisco and the Bay Area (City Bird Guides) (9781551050805): Joseph Morlan, Chris C. Fisher, Gary Ross, Ewa Pluciennik: Books

For several decades I have been a casual bird observer in the south San Francisco Bay Area and my curiosity had led me to acquire several of the acclaimed major 'Bird Guides' ( Peterson's, Sibley's, National Geographic, etc.) However, I seldom was able to ID birds I saw with confidence using those guides, there were just too many possible candidates in the guides for each of my sightings and I seldom could narrow down the possibilities to one species. The 'Birds of San Francisco' solved that problem for me. The 'Birds of San Francisco' guide focuses on approximately 120 of the most common species found in the Bay Area. It allots one page per specie which contains a large color illustration and references to other S.F. Bay Area species that have a similar appearence. There are also very useful graphic keys which quickly indicate the preferred habitats of that specie along with migration and breeding timeframes. Also included is a textual description and behavioural information useful for ide

Cargill Salt - San Francisco Bay

For generations, salt makers have protected an abundance of wildlife in the colorful salt ponds along the south San Francisco Bay shoreline. . Using nature's power: the sun and wind, Cargill Salt crystallizes natural sea salt from the Bay waters, producing 650,000 tons annually of a vital commodity used in food, industry and agriculture. . The marriage of salt making and wildlife preservation was officially recognized in 1974, when the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, the first urban national wildlife refuge was created on Cargill's operating salt ponds. That bond was strengthened recently when Cargill Salt set the stage for the largest wetland restoration

South San Francisco Bay is huge and unique, but because of tremendous declines in many fish species here it is largely overlooked by anglers and the government bureaucrats who have the power to restore the South Bay to what it once was. . Actually, this is not a bay, but an estuary that experiences huge changes in water temperature and salinity levels throughout the year. A key factor is rain and the resulting storm runoff that enters the bay. It can provide just the right freshwater/saltwater mix during the spring, and the end result is huge bumper crops of grass shrimp, the favorite food of most fish in the South Bay, especially perch and sturgeon.
